  • Incredibly ripe blackberry and black cherry aromas. Same ripe fruit flavors, bordering on overripe. Has some good tannic structure to provide balance, but not enough acidity. Very representative of the vintage, but not nearly at the level of the Rousseau or Jadot 1997 versions of Clos St. Jacques that I've tried in the past few years.

  • Perfectly acceptable Burgundy but just nothing really compelling about this wine. Next.

  • Working through my '97s. This isn't falling apart but I don't think it has a lot of years left. Color was clear ruby red with a thin rim of orange. Fine aromas, more fruits than funk. The mouth feel was smooth and elegant--I really enjoyed the tart cherry attack, yet the mid-palate seemed a little hollow. Age? Anyhow, you've got to love the cranberry-orange finish that just kept hanging on.

I opened the bottle an hour before dinner and took a small taste to guage where this bottle was at. 20 minutes later I realized I was still thinking about that sip. Is that orange I'm tasting? Did I find some spice there?.... That's Burgundy, baby. It gets you thinking. Dawn, btw, loved it.
