  • AP 7753010 18 11. Ordered at a restaurant, I am unsure if this is the auction bottle; it’s definitely not the standard Spatlese, as it has a Gold capsule and is labeled “alte Reben”.

    Beautiful spicy honey nose.
Botritized spice throughout. Smoke note. No petrol. Mineral throughout. Still primary, dominated by mineral, super-pure dried apricot and botrytis spice, just the barest hint of undergrowth. Good acidity, though not electric - leans just a tad fat. Long mineral finish. Tasty.

  • (Mostly) Spätlese dinner at Proxi (Chicago, IL): #18-11, 8% abv. The 2010 vintage I've never been particularly fond of because of what always strikes me as out-of-balance acidity. On the higher Prädikat wines (like Auslese onwards) that gives you this insane balancing act that can be really, really thrilling, but on the lower wines the acidity can be somewhat shrill. None of the text before is really relevant to this wine, just some random thoughts. This is a Spätlese that does pull of that balancing act between the fruit and the screaming acidity really well. Plenty of floral/honey notes on the nose. There's sweetness that comes across as a slightly peachy quality, and then there's that insane acidity that runs throughout the rest of this wine. It's a thrilling, absolutely exciting bottle of Dönnhoff that's drinking brilliantly now.

  • Opened 6 hours in advance and shared with a big group. Just got chance to try once. Serious stuff with excellent structure and fine fruity palate. Should age for decades if you have time.

  • From magnum. Intense and balanced ripe red apple fruit, fleshy blood orange, cherries, Asian pear, baking spices, elderflower, stones. Mouthwatering acidity. Finishes long and fresh.

  • Rieslingfeier 2017; 2/17/2017-2/18/2017 (NYC): Drank at Rieslingfeier dinner - brought by Cornelius Donnhoff, this was a knockout. I've been lucky to have this a few times before, and this was no different. Incredibly rich, yet so balanced that this has a mineral sharpness and zinging acids going through it. peach, pear, lime, stone. mouthwatering acids. long finish.
