'A bright moment for the Rhone-minded'

2010 Two Shepherds GSM Russian River Valley-Livermore Valley Red ($32, 13.8%): A tiny production from Sonoma's William Allen shows the subtle side of blending, here one-half Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre for the rest. (The first two from Saralee's Vineyard in Sonoma, the last from Livermore.) A fine case for Russian River Grenache, with an oregano accent, plus sandalwood and delicate boysenberry fruit. Juicy and invigorating.

  • Winemaker notes: Tasting from the first opened magnum, 1 of 24.
While there is some feedback the GSM is young, and bottle aging would make it even better, I am a fan of it fresher & brighter, and thus am in love with the magnum.

Having tasted from 375s (which I have completely abandoned now, am convinced wine hates 375s) 750ml., and 1.5,
all recently, the 1.5 is such a wonderful format, will have to expand this.

The nose reminds me of its earlier days, strawberry essence. Not as bright as the new 2011 100% release, and not over ripe, but like a fresh strawberry picked in the afternoon sun. Intermingled with notes of spice, and cedar.

On the palate, its vibrant with acid, a bit more mature than earlier tastings, but still fresh, juicy, red fruits, spice, and a lingering finish.

When will the next one be opened! :)

  • Winery Profile & Review: Two Shepherds: SRP: $32. Case Production: 50. Fermented & aged for 10 months neutral oak. Blended from 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 25% Mourvèdre. The nose is delicate, floral, and inviting – offering notes of strawberries, raspberries, lavender, tobacco leaf, and dried, wild herbs. On the palate, the soft tannins and bright acidity help the wine maintain its delicacy. Not a complex wine, but a wonderful Rhone blend.

  • Tasting again. The GSM isn't officially released although people continue to buy it when available, and Wicked Wines in Hburg has one case.
Best after opened for an hour plus, given its youth, and angular acidity which softens.
The bright strawberry and cranberry soften and let darker red fruit come forward, as well as some minerality.
When to release...oh that is the question :)
