Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 98 points

  • Johannes Leitz was pouring his wines yesterday in Chicago and this was one of them. I was very excited to try this wine. Neither the WS nor the WA scored this wine but the WS gave 3 other Leitz TBA's scores of 98, 98 and 96. Leitz can make magic in a bottle from what I have tasted of his Kabinetts, Spatlese and Auslese. This was the 1st dessert wine of his I have had.

This wine is expensive and rare. It will retail for about $300 per 375ml bottle and I'm sure less than 500 half bottles are made (42 cases). Keep in mind that the sugar ina TBA has to be a minimum of 150 Oechsle. That was absolutely no problem for Johannes in the ultraripe 2003 vintage. This wine blew the minimum away and was picked between 240 and 280 Oechsle!

As a result of the concentration and sweetness in this wine, it was starting to resemble a 6 Put or higher wine from Tokaji. The wine was already a light yellowish gold color. It looked like it had an oil slick on top of the wine as it swerled in the glass. All the sweetness was expertly balanced by a vibrant acidity. This was a thick viscous wine with notes of pear nectar and pineapple. Wonderful mouthfeel. Without doubt the best wine at the tasting. In my opinion no other wine came within 3 points. 98 points.
