A birthday at Blue Hill (Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Pocantico Hills, NY): In the flute, pale medium-gold. On the nose, loads of apple with secondary aromas of hazelnut, mango, yeast, and nutmeg; just a lovely, sexy nose. On the palate, a beautiful balance of acidity, fruit, effervescence, bread, with bits of spice and mineral complexity coming in and out with each sip. I don't have a great deal of experience with champagne, but this was quite clearly head-and-shoulders above any other champagne I've had to date. Really nice, and the WOTN for me.
One of the 9 champagnes in my Champagne tasting - did not stand out, however, was one of the wines of the tasting for some people. To me it was going through a dumb phase and was closed down a bit. Was it really worth the money? No. Great structure though, minerality, weight and fruit. Will keep the 2nd bottle for years to see how it develops. Cheers!
