Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Ultra-dark, inky color. Very nice nose of black pepper, black cherries, blackcurrants, blackberries, and black coffee. (Yes there is a pattern there.) On the palate we get an unexpectedly firm structure; it's not nearly as inky as the color or the Lodi appellation might suggest. Intense "black" flavors are held in place between rims of acidity amid smoky flavors. Coffee notes and a bit of black rubber assert themselves in the finish, along with rich but velvety tannins. There is a lot to like about this wine; in fact, maybe the PS I Love You group was founded to support it. If your heart sinks at the prospect of a Lodi Petite Sirah, then this wine is a wonderful antidote to such pessimism, because it's an admirable piece of winemaking. It lets Petite be Petite; the varietal characteristics shine through here in a very nice way, almost daring you to dislike it. Like Lady Gaga, this wine was Born This Way. I am no fan of L.G., but I can see when something is just being itself.
