  • Having this wine with Andrew at home quarantine period return from London where I got Covid, pairing with the delivery food well.

  • This wine was given a lot of praise from a blind tasting of some 2010 burgundies in Decanter magazine when the wine was released. So I bought a few.

I drank one bottle quite early, in 2014. That one was unresolved and a bit like a freight train filled with blueberries hitting you head on. A powerful wine, but giving only vast amounts of blueberries and nothing more complex.

This time, the wine has had 10 years since the grapes were plucked. The wine is much more calm and resolved. It needs a bit of time and air to show itself properly, but after an hour it gives me a pleasant and quite complex experience. Perhaps not a blockbuster top of the line wine, but absolutely full of quality and elegance.

It is now a more classic Volnay, giving lots of partially developed fruit and lots of floral notes on the nose. The palate is less aggressive then my last bottle, but still giving a nicely concentrated mouthfeel with some secondary notes of black tea and leather under a dominant layer of developed cherries and mature apples.

Still a healthy amount of tannins in here. Right now they are nicely integrated in the wine and contributes to the complexity and the structure of the mouthfeel.

All in all the wine is a rounded, complex, balanced and enjoyable experience, but not otherworldly.

  • Terroir-istes International - France, Burgundy, Volnay (Overgaauw Wine Estate): (Tasted Blind): A mid- crimson to orange colour. A deep, intense nose that delivers floral, minty notes alongside red plum, redcurrant, cherry and peach melba all under a gentle toasty oak layer. Dry on entry with rich warmed fruits of cranberry, plum and stone fruits (perhaps a hint of volatility, but it doesn't detract). There are layers of fruit here with savoury edges adding complexity whilst the firmer tannins and perky acidity a structural frame. There is a long lingering length as the acid drives the wine forward. A sprinkling of spice on the close this is really showing well. It has a wonderful precision or poise to it and developed nicely in the glass.
