A lot more open than last time I had this wine. Lofs of strawberries, light and soft and elegant fruit. No abundant fruit whatsoever, which raises the level of elegance substantially. Will certainly improve with cellaring.
My second taste of this wine in less than two weeks. This time it is from a friend’s cellar and the bottle was opened for one hour. There is nothing materially different to report from the previous tasting note. However, I will say again that the bouquet is very special and addictive--complex, layered, effusive and multi-dimensional. Brilliant and beautiful! And while I am singing the wine’s praises, it bears repeating that the rich fresh flavors show amazing depth, length, drive and lift. Again, brilliant and beautiful! Simply put: an amazing young wine that has greatness written all over it. 96+ points.
This wine has a bright medium-red corundum color. Its bouquet is very complex: ripe cherry, strawberry and damson plum compote laced with scents of game, smoke, sous bois, roasted herbs and blue flowers. The aromas are so rich and layered that it is tough pulling your nose from the glass. Medium-bodied and then some, there is considerable density and dry extract. This is followed by concentrated yet bright flavors of cherry, redcurrant, gravy, anise, soil and mineral. These fresh flavors are awash with a saline-infused, lip-smacking acidity that remains intact through the long finish. And the big tannins are remarkably smooth and tamed. This superb wine is the perfect expression of pinot ripeness, power and balance. Fully deserving of its score, it is the loveliest, most complete young red Burgundy I tasted recently. 96+ points.
Drank at the Domaine. A bit more reserved than the 2009. Loads of dark fruit, spice and earth. Deep and concentrated. Not as pretty as the 2009 at this stage. More structured and slightly stern. I'm sure my score will improve as this evolves.
Visit to Domaine des Lambrays (Morey-St-Denis): (Yield 25 hl/ha). Again great depth of colour. Beautiful complex lifted fruit aromas with savoury notes. Blackberries, black currants, blueberries, cherries and hints of tropical fruit. Great intensity on entry and a gorgeous mouthfeel; big fruit in perfect balance with the fine-grained tannins and acids. Palate coating depth with real, profound structure and power. My favourite of the three vintages. More classical in style than the other two vintages.
