  • Not decanted. A bit murky rather than clear, so probably a bit of very fine sediment. On the nose there's furniture polish, and some sour cherry. Balanced towards the fresh, and lacking a bit depth in the fruit. Good length. This bottle was a little step down from one I drank almost exactly a year ago, so I go down one point to the borderline between very good and excellent.

  • From a stony plot above the village where Benjamin manages the vines. Intense dark red. An expressive nose shouting fresh calcaire de Premeaux, rose petals and red pinot fruit. The mouthfeel is refined but straight in its boot, with good red fruited flavors, and finishing fresh and chiselled . This uphill wine is not a dense blockbuster, but after all this place is not Mitants, santenots or clos des chenes, it is uphill on thin soil, and Benjamin made a perfectly balanced wine in a warm vintage. It is just entering its drinking window and may evolve into a supremely elegant Volnay in 10 years.

  • Some slight visual signs of ageing. On the nose, it's deep and fresh with several layers. There's the obligatory sour cherries, with hibiscus and furniture polish. In the mouth it is fresh, with very good length. I will not say elegant, but it may become elegant with time. It works very well with food, though, and that's a major plus for any wine. (My points are conservative, to fit with the original scale. So this is an excellent wine!)

  • La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Eventi Hotel - New York NY): Walk around tasting vertical. Complex and layered now, even without being particularly powerful. Very good now.

  • Sunday lunch with friends. This wine has a deep cherry red colour and a reticent nose that opened in the glass to reveal red cherries, wild strawberries and dark raspberries with touches of menthol, autumn herbs and limestone. The palate is medium weight and quite tight with a firm finish of tannin and stony minerality. Despite the lovely crunchy fruit flavours and mineral touches this wine is quite closed and probably will reward another 5-10 years in a dark cool cellar.
