  • Sourced from the Europvin library, this looked like it had been re-corked at some stage. It was simply wonderful. It had an incredible perfume of violets, pine needles, lavender, raspberry and spiced plum. It was full and rich and layered. There was a gentle meatiness and the wine possessed real latent power. It had so much volume and was silky and expansive.

  • nose - burnt sugar, bourbon, orange peel, candied cherry, and a hint of tomato paste
mouth - black tea, kirsch, brown sugar, orange peel, clove, very liqueresque. The long finish is quite reminiscent of strongly brewed turkish tea, with hints of sweet cherry and then dry tannins. Great wine. Regal. In my opinion this completely transcends the genre and doesnt taste anything at all like other chateauneuf de-pape (that I've had).

  • (CDV)
    93-94?

  • Decanted 6 hours in advance which was not enough. This was a surprisingly youthful wine that continued to open up over the course of the evening. Classic Rayas & the usual perfect pairing with pan-seared duck breast. This bottle was stored in a cool cellar since release.

  • A wine that tempts you to describe it in superlatives only. Unique, singular, elegant and venerable would all be appropriate terms. This came across as settled and in an ideal drinking window. Layered array of aging notes including pipe tobacco, cigar box, some leather, smoke and scorched earth. But also a precise fruit of red cherry, on balance sweeter spices of vanilla and a touch of liquorice. The palate delicate, harmonious and weightless with a texture that is pure silk, perfectly integrated tannin and amazingly fresh acidity. Couldn’t stop thinking this wine would happen if you crossbred a nicely aged Cognac with Burgundy Grand Cru.
