Slightly musty cellar notes in the nose at the beginning, which quickly disappear. Then development of balsamic notes. forest floor, mushrooms. Still strong, supporting acidity and harmonious tannins on the palate, as well as beautiful tertiary aromas. Long finish. Perfectly matured, great single vineyard Chianti classico!

The second of my three Castello di Ama single vineyards from the 1990 vintage before the producer massively raised prices. Bottle #3757. Still very youthful with a deep cherry red to the edge. Muted nose of dark red fruit and earth but no real complexity. Nice initial burst of deep cherry giving way to plenty of tannin. The acid has integrated well but the tannic structure remains unresolved. Unfortunately, the pronounced tannins are primarily due to a lack of midpalate where the fruit has seemed to have faded significantly. I find this highly unusual for sangiovese which I generally find to be fairly linear. Totally overshadowed by a bottle of Corte Pavone Brunello Riserva from the same vintage that followed. Truely a bit disappointing given the reputation of this bottling and its market positioning. This bottling certainly does not justify the pricing of more recent vintages.

ORANGE ON THE EDGE. BLACK CHERRIES, MINT, AND LICORICE IN THE NOSE. LOTS OF FRUIT IN THE FLAVOR WITH BLACK CHERRIES AND CURRENTS. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH.

Slightly thin red. Nose of almonds and raisins. Bright red cherries, bright acids. Very nice. My WOTF, Group's WOTF.
