  1st wine of the January 8 2013 Jujube Wine dinner featuring the wines of Novelty Hill and Janiuk, paired with dungeness crab and green papaya salad rolls with spiced ghee. Barrel fermented and aged 9 months on 50% new oak. Oxidized, oaky nose with lemon creme, lime spritzer, and hints of coconut. Good acidity considering the oak and malolactic treatment. Lemon-citrus and butterscotch tones followed by a slightly tart green apple skin finish; oak tannins contribute to a dry finish. Nice use of oak but the lack of fruit intensity and weaker body bring the score down. Pairing went very well, the papaya added acidity that the wine was lacking, plus the oak was a nice complement to the dish. Not a great value at the offered price of $27.

  On the sweeter side, which is not the norm from Novelty Hill. Pear dominates the fruit flavors.

  100% single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Stillwater Creek Vineyard in the Frenchman Hills. Pale yellow color. Buttery apple nose. Soft palate featuring apple, light herbs, and a smooth medium-long buttery finish. Light to medium weight overall, but very nice character.
