  • Team Pete Dinner (Cove99, Peck Seah Street, Singapore): We had a less than impressive tasting at Dupont-Tisserandot a few years back, with a lot of the wines coming out over-extracted and messy in the barrels. This was a real surprise though – a really solid, enjoyable Gevrey 1er Cru. It had a beautiful nose, with lush earthy, meaty, sous bois aromas swirling around a core dark cherries and berries, dried flowers and fragrant spice. Beautiful. I really liked it on the palate too. It had a nice balance and a decent structure, with melting acidity and fine, slightly powdery tannins laced through soft, sweet flavours of red cherries and raspberries. I found the wine just a touch soft, so that it seemed a little flabby at the edges of the finish, drifting away with a little twist of herb and sweet red fruit. Otherwise, it was really nice. Yummy, and drinking beautifully now. NB: I actually have had a bottle of this before, and I expressed the same surprise at the pleasing qualities it had. Totally forgot about it though. Time to reconsider the house perhaps.

  • Burgundy 1er Cru Night (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria): I was pleasantly surprised by this - it was good stuff. I have not been a big fan of Dupont-Tisserandot's style of wines, which seemed to me rather rough and rustic when young. However, this bottle was perhaps an example of how well his wines can age given enough time. The nose was interesting, with stewed scents of sundried tomatoes and dried cherries, a nice bit of umami, chicken-soup aromas, herby black-tea notes that spoke of the wine's age and some coffee ground swirling around. Pretty attractive. The palate was wonderfully resolved, with melting tannins and fully integrated but still bright acidity framing delicious flavours of dark cherries, plums and spice, even a bit of haw flakes. Nicely voluptuous and fruity, yet buttressed with a good bit of savoury meat and spice towards the finish, this was very nice indeed. While not super polished, this was a very confident expression of Gevrey. At the perfect place for drinking now.
