| Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 69 notes) | | | Tasted by glg on 2/6/2010 & rated 89 points: A lot of cedar or wood on initial opening - which faded and revealed a nice, vibrant, dark fruit dominated claret. Did best with about 2 hours of air. (203 views) | | | Tasted by ataraxia on 2/2/2010 & rated 89 points: S$100. Not decanted, drunk over 3 hours. Served blind to me by my wife. Quite a classic Pauillac with the dark fruits and minerals present in this wine. The length of this wine was, for me, the saving grace. Quite a long finish and that was what made me guess that this was not a cheap (<$50) bottle. However, I don't think this wine is very balanced. Too much tannins with not enough fruit and complexity showing. I think maybe in 5 years it may open up to be more revealing, but as of now, this is not ready to be drunk. With this label, $100 is a fair price though I don't think I'll buy many more of this wine. (553 views) | | | Tasted by Redirector on 1/26/2010 & rated 92 points: Pontet-Canet Vertical with Alfred Tesseron, Kevin Zraly, and Sherry Lehmann (Four Seasons Restaurant, Manhattan): In a great spot now. Deep, dark, a little brooding but when pushed, here it comes -- cassis, black cherry and a rich blackberry aroma, confirmed on the palate. Full bodied. Nice length. The bottle holds up over several hours, and was great with a steak after the tasting. Open and enjoy. (742 views) | | | Tasted by richard.stevens on 1/14/2010 & rated 90 points: Clear, deep ruby with a hint of brick on the rim.
Nose clean with pronounced blackcurrant and black cherry, also leather, cedar and tobacco. Developing.
Palate dry, medium(+) acid and medium(-) tannins. Medium alcohol and full-bodied. Pronounced blackcurrant and also leather, cedar, tobacco, meat and cream.
Long finish
Very good, high priced, ready (just) but will develop further (945 views) | | | Tasted by Khamen on 1/10/2010 & rated 89 points: This needed time to shake out the creases from bottle, but on this occasion it didn't get it - pop and pour. Inky and full-bodied with great Pauillac typicity, but perhaps lacking a little grace. All the components seem to be there but they're slightly out of balance and need time to integrate. Still rather tight and primary. I like it - I like it a lot - but at the moment it's all about potential. Try another one in 2-3 years. 89+ (896 views) | | | Tasted by pjaines on 1/9/2010: Decent, but not stunning wine. The nose has all the right ingredients for a classic Paulliac but the palate falls short - a bit watery, with a gaping hole on the mid-palate. Average - there are better wines in this vintage for half the price. (860 views) | | | Tasted by rjayson on 12/31/2009 & rated 91 points: opened and tasted with not much going on. used vacuum top and waited 2 days. Tannins became totally integrated and the taste was elegant with a long finish. NOSE: very ripe fruit - blackberries; lots of oak; hint of graphite; not funky.
BODY: garnet w/mollasses hue throughout; color is of medium-deep depth; lots of fine particulate matter; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: blackberries; lots of oak; hint of funky earthiness; well-balanced with soft tannins; this is a huge wine, and really needs at least 5, if not 15, more years. Has potential to score higher if some oak gets absorbed. Strong "Hold" recommendation on this one.
(?). 88. (1755 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 11/11/2009 & rated 88 points: Dark blue purple. A but reserved, but has the currant, pencil shavings, and cigar box aromas of a good Bdx. On the palate, still reserved, but certainly with plenty of fruit concentration and balancing acids. One gets the sense the wine's best days are still ahead provided the fruit opens up a bit. Nice persistent finish. Good pairing with a rei-eye. (1880 views) | | | Tasted by amateurwino on 11/8/2009: pretty purple fruits on nose, unmistakably Pauillac. Don't recall much about the palate, except that this was still too young to drink - surprisingly tannic, didn't get to really concentrate on this one, had only a small taste (1686 views) | | | Tasted by Eating is Cheating on 10/25/2009: The first of 3 loose bottles (there is also a case yet to be attacked). Decanted approx 2 hours. Intense, deep indigo-purple colour, deep hue right out to the edge, almost opaque, showing really no development at all. The nose continues in similar vein - a very full-on bouquet of piercing blackcurrant and blackberry, black cherry, and other quite primary (but oak-driven) elements such as caramel. As it opens out, aromas of cedar and pencil shavings also appear. Each aroma is itself very impressive but they have yet to resolve in any meaningful way. The same theme is continued on the palate - a spicy but delicious entry which is heavy on oak gives way to a huge, mouthfilling wealth of blackberry, cassis, coffee and cherry on the mid-palate, the flavours striving manfully to mask the massive tannins until the latter emerge on the finish, which is dry and tannic but nevertheless very long. This wine potentially has everything in spades (massive, pure, fruit; oak notes; a wealth of ripe tannins; length and purity on the palate; beautifully judged acidity to string it all together) ... but for now it is a mere infant, all these building blocks of a potentially stunning wine just jumbled together in the glass without having yet knit together. This is intriguing, and I am glad I have a good stock of further bottles through which to monitor its development. Excellent, but hold for some time. (1047 views) | | | Tasted by txfireman on 10/2/2009 & rated 93 points: strong aromatic nose. oak, cassis, fruit. first taste was boring...not tannic but dry. tons of structure...will evolve over time. 89-90 pts (2596 views) | | | Tasted by admid on 8/31/2009 & rated 92 points: Brick red Aroma: Intense and complex bouqet with barn, animals, blackcurrant, balsam and raisins Full-boded. Very good texture and available tannins. Cherry flavor on the palate. Extreme length (2723 views) | | | Tasted by LWI on 8/30/2009 & rated 92 points: Bordeaux 2008 Primeur (The National Opera, Oslo): Lovely scent of cedar and dark berries. Fresh with good lenght, but lacking somewhat on the entrance. Will probably develop further (2608 views) | | | Tasted by MauriceE on 8/29/2009 & rated 90 points: Powerful wine with potential for further cellaring. Good length, just a little dry finish. Excellent XXXX Phaneuf 3 août 2009 (2748 views) | | | Tasted by bbrantley on 7/30/2009 & rated 90 points: Inky black/purple. Strong cassis aromas on the nose, but still very primary. Very youthful on the palate. some coffee, dark fruit and lots of structure. This has great concentration and I can see it evolving into something special but its still very young. Surprised that a 2001 would be this early in its evolution. (2948 views) | | | Tasted by Haut Brion on 7/27/2009: ***.5 (3007 views) | | | Tasted by jrobs7777 on 6/5/2009 & rated 93 points: Dinner at Bibou - BYOB in Philadelphia (1009 South 8th Street): I was surprised at how well this was drinking tonight. Bright and fresh nose. Grass, minerals, red fruit, damp earth and graphite. This is contrast to some of the bigger and more powerful Pontet Canets. This has a young bright and fresh profile. Not particularly rich or complex on the palate, which is not to say that this is not a very good wine -- it is. But it was very different from some other vintages that I have tasted recently. Palate featured black fruit, currant, some earth tones. Decent complexity. Sweet tannins leading to a very nice medium to long finish. This is drinking very well right now. We'll have to wait and see how the other bottles will age. (3472 views) | | | Tasted by bleucheesecake on 4/26/2009 & rated 88 points: Nose: Elegant, red fruit, some earth.. typical pauillac... Palate: Red fruit, cedar, moderately complex. However body is thin, low on acid, tannins rather weak.. Finish is rather short. Wine is elegant and classy but comes across watered down. This wine must be decanted for at least 2 hours for its character to surface. (3693 views) | | | Tasted by Alex H on 4/25/2009 & rated 81 points: A flight of bord 01s and others: Lifted pepper and perfumed smoked leather. Just a squeeze of capsicum and some pencil shavings. Ripe but grippy acidity, very lively with almost grapefruit like acidity. Unfortunately , it is not paillac enough being so fresh and doesn't have enough green capsicums as previous pontets tasted. About red wine
The variety Red Bordeaux Blend on CellarTracker implies any blend using any or all of the five traditional Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. As such, this is used worldwide, whether for wines from Bordeaux, Meritages from California and Canada, some Super-Tuscan wines etc.

Vins du Médoc (Conseil des Vins du Médoc)
The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.
The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.
With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.
Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)
In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
