  • The deck was entirely stacked against it - pop n pour right from horizontal and into a small plastic cup. An absolute delight! Soft fruits and gentle, modest tannins bolstered fully mature spice and floral flavors. It balanced cerebral and pleasurable delightfully. Serving conditions and, I'm sure the vintage, kept this from scaling great heights but it was a pleasure spending time with it.

  • Wow. This is showing extremely well. This is clearly preserved with pristine care. Cork was only half bled through.
The nose opened in about 30 minutes in the decanter. Color was bricking nicely at the rim, nice brighter crimson.
Nose of extremely worn and old leather laced dark cherry and raspberry, cigar box, lots of light spice qualities, herbs and Autumnal essence. The palate shows more fruit than the nose. Nice tart cherries and other red fruit. Spice on the palate as well as touches of hay and barnyard. Very earthy and Old World. Again, this couldn't be showing any better at this point. Gorgeous and subtle.

  • This wine was a nice surprise as i thought it would be "over the hill". 30 minutes after decanting it opened nice with a mix of smooth fruit and terroir.

  • Birthday wines; 12/10/2010-12/14/2010: Now this is a pauliiac with top cru classe nose of capsicum married nicely with high quality weathered leather. Dark earth and truffles with mocha smooth tannins. Classic pauliiac in an unexpected vintage

  • Alex's Birthday BBQ (Alex's place): My first Bordeaux from my birth-year. Never thought to try a 1980, given the better vintages both before and after, but I must say this was really good. None of us placed it as a 1980 when blinded. A classic Pauillac rounded off with typical Pichon Lalande finesse, this had a lovely nose of cigar, tobacco leaf, roasted capsicum, cedar and some flowers. The palate opened with a soft, silky caress of cassis and tobacco. Lovely texture - very plush and luxuriant, yet lively, with lots of complexity playing around the mouth. Past the mid-palate and toward the finish, there were earth and meat notes, and a long cigary tail with a hint of menthol, more sweet cassis and just a whiff of tobacco smoke. Not the richest Pichon Lalande, but it had such elegant finesse. Absolutely at peak. A lovely wine.
