France 2013 - Côte d'Or; 4/24/2013-4/26/2013 (Beaune): Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. A bit shut down on the nose, darker red pinot fruit, lots of depth. After some vigorous swirling a subtle lifted/herbaceous note emerges which has me concerned. Great acidity, fine tannins but well-structured and great intensity on the palate. Lacy texture. While this doesn’t seem nearly as bad, it would a real shame if this wine turns out like the 04 has.
One of the best vineyards in the world and Mugnier never disappoint with this wine. As always very deep and complex. Needs more time but a big win already. I almost cry drinking this wine every time. THis year it is a bit like the 07 but with a bigger costume. Lovely.
France 2012 - Côte d'Or; 7/16/2012-7/21/2012 (Beaune): Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Heavily reduced nose made things very difficult to evaluate. But on the palate things were much better with pure red pinot fruit with the silkiest and most elegant profile yet. Lots of depth and layers of fruit along with the textural purity that only few wines can offer. While the entry and pure silk, the structure creeps in on the back end carrying through to the extremely long finish. There’s plenty of acidity and energy to this. I think ultimately the Amoureuses will take longer to come around but this will also need plenty of time. (93-96).
