  • This was a problematic vintage for Broadley, and I thought I returned most of my wines, but found this in the back of my off-site storage. Like the bottles of '01 tried in the early 2000s, this a little bretty and barnyardy, but the earth and mushroom character from age work better with those characteristics vs when the wine was younger. Still not what I'd consider particularly good, but certainly drinkable. Best 5-10 minutes after opened. This started losing steam after open an hour.

  • May try decanting the other bottle, but this wine was so much fun to keep tasting as it was allowed to breathe in the bottle and be swirled in the glass. The aroma was barnyardy, more like the floor of the barnyard, almost a manure quality. Got to watch people smell the wine, notice that the wine's color did show some of its age, then apprehensively taste it. There was still a lot of sweet berry flavors, much to their relief. As the wine opened at about halfway through the bottle, the tannins did emerge. Drink now.

  • Tobacco and barnyard nose. Dark fruit, a little funky barnyard, leathery and oaky. I love it.

  • I don't think I agree with fredb about the oak. I do agree it's on a plateau, or possibly even decline. Worked well with grilled black cod.

  • Smoky ruby/garnet color with some thinning at the rim and moderate transparency. Smoky nose with sous bois, cherries, and cranberries. Tart cherry/cranberry palate with beet, smoke, and sous bois lurking under a heavy veneer of toasty oak. This is a vintage where the oak treatment is not well absorbed by the wine. I don't anticipate any improvement, although it is structurally a very sound wine that will last in the bottle.
