  • Hard to judge a wine of this age against so much younger wines. This bottle bought from auction 4 months ago.The level is excellent at very top shoulder but the capsule looks to have been removed and replaced so I suspect this has been topped up. Taste is right for very old claret. Mushroom, cedar and liquorice. Beautifully soft and smooth. Not a hint of volatile acidity. Good long finish. A little simple perhaps but lovely and elegant nonetheless. Will be an interesting comparison with the 62 Cos I have for next year; the '28 was wonderful in '88.

  • This was a fun bottle and though this reached (and came down from) its peak decades ago, it still has a rich and assertive nose with a malty, cherry, leather, nutty nose. More sedate on the palate.

  • The medium-plus intensity nose opens with redcurrant, cedar, leather, and beef blood. This is attenuated on the palate and the tannins have developed into a velvety afterthought.

Few of the 62s are still virile (e.g. the Haut Brion); most of them are quite tired at this point. Always pleased to drink a mature Leoville Barton, but these were likely at their best 25 years ago. It does serve as a good reminder to enjoy your 85s while they are in the prime of their life!
