Holy cow! This was great wine, an eye opener for me. I've had only one other "old" version of this wine, and it was a '91 and three years ago now. This one showed youthful and bright, with dark and brambly fruit, complicated by herbal and forestal and dried citrus peel, and the whole nose tumbled about, every changing, as though it was just getting started in real life after graduating college. Balanced and with great acidity and verve, this is simply excellent wine, and I want to come back for another dip in the pool.
Tasting of 5 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1980's, this wine showed brick red in the glass compared to all the others but it was the oldest poured tonight, opened with an old, musty book nose, touch of orange peel, consistently improved on the nose throughout the evening when it showed black cherry and blackberry fruit, and roasted meat on the nose, big body, very tasty and complex, but never call it elegant, more like Chateau Pichon Baron or Chateau Leoville Barton, not the best bottle that I have tasted but hardly bad, long, long, flavorful finish. Tied for #2 of 5.
There was more brightness in this bottle than the previous one I tasted. Blue and red fruit that has faded in intensity but maintained a good purity. The star is the depth of other flavors and how each sip leaves a different impression. Tobacco, corn husk, minerals, and deep, dank forest. Some metallic notes that a few people found distracting. Medium finish.
Dried cork, possibly stewed. Prunish, hot wine. Did not enjoy. Unclear if representative. Bought in DC, shop has four more all from same collection. Would avoid. Good news, popped an 81 Rioja and an 82 Bordeaux at the same time - both terrific.
