  • Dried roses, tobacco, red cherries, plums, blue fruits, spice, smoke truffles, and chocolate create the attention-seeking perfume. The palate is exotic, supple, and sensuous, with layers of ripe, spicy plums, cherries, smoke, and chocolate. The wine is long, opulent, rich, and most importantly, unique in character. It’s also still young and vibrant. Drink from 2024-2050.

  • R generously brought this to share when the theme was “casual”. We’ll take casual as it is.

Pop and pour for taste before a 1.5 hour decant. Soaring bouquet at the start. You just look at each other, nod and smile type of nose. Fresh roses, strawberries, fresh cigar, lightly spiced, bell peppers. Just a ton of volume and wholesomeness to be found. After 2 hours in decanter, mushrooms, turns abit deeper and darker, more serious and with more perceiveable structure. I preferred it before the decant tbh but the aromatics on this man. It’s just wild.

  • A superb exemplar of Pétrus, the 1990 is bold, voluptuous, massively fruity and yet somehow well balanced. Surely at peak now. Luscious but with no resemblance to some of those over-the-top California fruit bombs. Easy to drink but you need to pay attention if you want to understand all that it wants to tell you.

  • Decadently rich yet balanced black fruit palate. This bottle is quieter than the best examples but still pretty darn good.

  • Pétrus dinner (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Double decanted (briefly). Perfect condition, from an unopened case purchased en primeur. Mint. Warm and ripe but fresh and flowing, fully mature, the bouquet is the right bank equivalent of the nose of Haut-Brion 1989, perfect harmony and balance, perfectly at ease with itself, rich but effortlessly elegant, sweet and gentle but firm and lively, flowers and crushed red berries, hint of white truffle, long and dreamy finish. Words of mine cannot do it justice. Dances away into the night.
