Been awhile since I've reached for an older Montelena, but it brought back a fondness for well aged Cali cab...unmistakable Napa nose and refined tannins...had with a well prepared porterhouse cooked on the Egg!
Had the day after Christmas with Kansas City Steak Co strip steaks (highly recommend them). Wine came off a bit thin and not what we were expecting. Hope the next two are more in line with what they should be. Not bad mind you, but not a WOW wine.
Decanted, tasted over 3 hrs and Day 2; bottle from secondary market -nearly opaque med dark red with minimal bricking -plum cassis oak and a touch of earthy mature elements -med acidity, med+ weight and depth, faint remnants of red fruits lie underneath sweet tobacco and gentle earthiness, med- tannic structure on the moderately complex and long finish with traces of heat/oak/bitter; better on Day 2 -in a good place with some maturity peeking through but enough depth and structure to support additional aging for 5-10 years
