  • Burnished gold. Nose of a well-aged Sauternes, vanilla, tangerine, hint of pineapple. Taste was similar to the nose. A wonderful Sauternes, but did it live up to the Yquem name? Not so sure.

  • Tasted blind, this wine had an amber/gold center and yellow rims. The high- intensity nose displayed lemon custard, vanilla, botrytis, and some orange.

In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with the firm acidity buried in fruit. It had great length. It had the orange flavors and richness of Rieussec and the great balance and integration of Raymond Lafon. But neither of those wines has shown all these facets together.

This is right in the zone in my book. However, I would expect it to stay there for many, many years.

  • We celebrated a friend's birthday with a wonderful meal capped by tasting a bottle bought back when we and it were young. It had lost none of its vitality. The ultimate in a smooth silky and nuanced flavor. The clarity of this liquid gold was amazing...The color was a gold headed toward amber. Although I've seldom met a grand cru I didn't like and I am not generally a great fan of dessert wines, this was truly extraordinary.

  • While I like d'Yquem, I have never been completely in love with the wine as I find the wine is often very medicinal at the back end. This however was not the case tonight. The wine was simply was glorious. A lush, viscous wine with tons of tropical fruits and coconut on the palate and a sweet and decadent finish.

(d’Yquem) The ’76 Yquem was excellent, but merely that.
