  • How do you say rock star? On this night, you said with 1998 Guigal La Landonne! Full bodied, fresh, lively, intense, pure, long, mouth filling and balanced, with a nose that never stopped and a finish that lasted even longer. Still young, the wine clearly improved with air. Wait another 5 or more years, or give it 2 hours of air.

  • Drank in Hong Kong
Had along side a '98 Grange, what a nice way to try old Vs new world. Both were beautiful but this just has some more class and finesse. Wonderful stuff.

  • Drank for the second time within 48 hours, though 13.000 kilometers apart. How lucky can a wine-lover be? Based on the earlier experience, wine was opened 12 hours and double decanted 4 hours before drinking. This did not open the wine completely, but the impressive intensity and purity stood out from the first sip. See tasting note below. This wine will be a stunner for 30+ years. The contrast with its sexy, approachable and utterly pleasant 1998 La Turque sister is striking.

  • A private tasting and dinner (Bilthoven): Double decanted. 100% Syrah. Very youthful, extremely energetic and concentrated, incredibly pure and powerful but completely closed, fabulous fruit, needs decades, an essence of Côte Rôtie. I could imagine this wine achieving perfection in 10 - 20 years.

  • Drank together with La Turque 1998. Opened 8 hours before and decanted just before drinking over the course of 3 hours. Stunning wine, clearly too young, initially closed, but gradually opening up. Though certainly massive, it's a mammoth on ballet shoes, elegant and gracious. Typical shiraz notes of spice box and black pepper. Lots of black fruit: huge blackberry and raspberry scents, later also creme de cassis, strawberry and some lighter, fresher hints of mint and citrus. Gradually deepening, smoke, bacon, juicy meat, smoked ham (pata negra!) taking over. After 3 hours in the decanter Cuban cigars, cedar, figs, ripe plums, tar and earth. Fresh with good acidity. All signs say this wine can still improve over the course of the next 20+ years. Can't wait to be around when it happens!
