| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 29 notes) | | | Tasted by Nanda on 12/12/2009 & rated 91 points: Bold nose is full of black fruits and a big smoked meat note. Palate is full bodied with rich, chewy black fruit. Herbs, meat and spice notes add complexity. A rich, low acid style that worked well with a spicy Moroccan lamb stew. (163 views) | | | Tasted by caboychuck on 9/28/2009: Cassis, dark fruit and black berries on the nose. Round cassis, fruit on the palate backed by terrific acidity and structure. This stuff is terrific. (268 views) | | | Tasted by dcclimb on 8/19/2009 & rated 90 points: Not an entirely convincing effort in my opinion. Brownish garnet colour. Very closed nose at first; earthy pan grille, roasted meat, something vaguely vegetal after about an hour of decanting. About the same impression on the palate. Long but not terribly enjoyable finish. Overall, I was hoping for a bright structured syrah in the Rhone style and found something dark and not altogether endearing. (351 views) | | | Tasted by rmodak on 6/12/2009 & rated 91 points: This is drinking at peak now. Initially, there is a hint of brett that blows off. Round blackberry, roasted meat, herbs and earth. The balance between old world terroir with rich fruit is impressive. (492 views) | | | Tasted by ToddR911 on 5/24/2009 & rated 89 points: Blackberries, cherries and dirt on the nose. Leather and charcoal once it opens up. Has some spiciness to it as well. Not overly complex but a nice wine. (462 views) | | | Tasted by Old_Winyards on 5/13/2009: Didn't take notes, but while I thought this was good, it didn't really wow me, or have any special complexity. Plenty of fruit though, and enough tannins for several more years... possibly it could develop more with additional aging. (538 views) | | | Tasted by Nanda on 4/11/2009 & rated 91 points: Full nose with a nice mix of black fruit, herbs, earth and licorice. Palate is medium-to-full bodied and full of black fruits. There is medium concentration and richness of fruit here - in contrast to many Cali and Aussie examples of syrah, giving it a more old world feel. Great balance and a medium-long spice-flavored finish. Seemingly at peak to my tastes. (610 views) | | | Tasted by J2K on 7/13/2008 & rated 94 points: This was a little funky at first with some licorice on the nose. That blew off fairly quickly to full body tastes of charcoal, and earth earthy with a good mix of dark fruit. Good balance of acidity brought it all together. This was tasting best after about 4 or 5 hours. Kind of an old world new world mix and could last a few more years. (715 views) | | | Tasted by jkramer65 on 7/12/2008 flawed bottle: huge bummer. i could tell this wine was fantastic. except it was corked. everything i did to try and remedy failed. very disappointed. (755 views) | | | Tasted by Biglama on 5/26/2008 & rated 91 points: rijke rode kleur, mooie kruidige neus met peper en donker rood fruit, smaak is licht romig met veel concentratie en kracht, mooi gemaakte wijn die veel geeft (881 views) | | | Tasted by winemaker on 5/1/2008 & rated 92 points: Drinking great, but will last for years. Big, fruity, viscous wine with a hint of roasted earth. (874 views) | | | Tasted by ajr on 4/30/2008 & rated 90 points: stll young with moderate tannins but drinkable now. fabuluous wine. will wait about 1 yr. before trying another. (911 views) | | | Tasted by ed-d on 12/21/2007 & rated 95 points: Intriguing nose of licorice, charcoal, blackberry & earth. Sweet blackberry fruit wrapped in evident, but sweet tannins. Absolutely delicious! A modern style, but not a fruit bomb. The back end had nice grip that worked stunningly with the grilled lamb chops for dinner. I wish I had more of this wine, as it is drinking well now & has the stuffing to keep for many more years. Nicely done! (1126 views) | | | Tasted by Not Levine on 12/16/2007: Damned tasty! A hint of oak on the back end which didn't detract a lick from this full-bodied wine. Sweet raspberry, chocolate and pepper. Will last many years. (1238 views) | | | Tasted by djb on 11/19/2007 & rated 91 points: The last of a few and the best bottle to date. Deep color and dark fruits with a hint of pepper and some oak. The nose opens quickly with some air. While a powerful wine, there is good acidity and elegance. Still a bit tannic and angular. I imagine there's still some upside potential. (1231 views) | | | Tasted by MJHDC on 10/14/2007: Deep purple, rich and complex, but not heavy. Despite some less than ideal stemware, this had a lot of black and blue fruit aromas, along with some licorice, smoke and spice. Classy. Brought back memories of the first time I had this wine in Toledo, Spain. The palate is full-bodied yet elegant. A nice racy acidic edge serves to balanace the fruit and tannin. Great interplay of dark fruits, herbs and minerals on the palate. Seamless wit h excellent length. Lots of complexity and subtlety --- a terrific wine. (2056 views) | | | Tasted by trankin on 8/11/2006 flawed bottle: See edit note at end. Day one. Upon opening, this is just a dark funky nose with nice fruit underneath. The funk however is so overpowering that it's difficult to get to any of the flavors underneath. It's sort of a meat-locker thing, but not in a good way - more like meat that's going bad and growing lots of mold. Really not sure how to describe it. Would normally have decanted but this was a last minute pull from the cellar. Hopefully with a bit more air this will improve. Decided to leave it for another day and retry. Day 2. After being vacu-vinned over night, opened and allowed to breathe for about 2-2.5 hours. Noticeable better than last night; the funk has dissipated somewhat and the fruit is nicer. However, the funk is still there and the wine underneath is marred by a fairly aggressive acidity. It's difficult when a wine has such wonderful fruit but is marred by problems like this. Ultimately, while not a bad wine, I really didn't enjoy this.
Edited to remove the rating (which was 86) and mark as flawed. Enough knowledgeable people seem to think this was a flawed bottle that I'm going to assume it was. Tasted June 10, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Visited several times over the evening. Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear throughout. Nose was fairly tight eventually giving way to some aromas of leather, mixed dark fruits, white pepper and some herbal notes. Flavors of Bing cherries, black licorice and black berries. Drying tannins and young acidity with good weight on the palate. Can be drank now with an hour in the decanter but should age nicely another 5-7 years. Considering this wine is still readily available at around the mid-$20s price point I’d say the value here is at a minimum recommended, likely highly recommended. (2748 views) | | | Tasted by ddamron on 3/21/2006 & rated 92 points: my gawd- great wine! deep purple color and complex wine. I agree with the other notes - this wine could use some cellar time. Wish I had more. (2236 views) | | | Tasted by Veraison on 11/4/2004: Blind Red Hot and Blue Wines: Blind 7 - Bright lemon and red fruit nose. Bright, sweet raspberry fruit on the palate. Not bad. Loved by several other tasters. Maybe I was spending too much time trying to guess what it might be. I was told that it is mostly Syrah. Supposedly a pretty good value. | By Lyle Fass Rockss and Fruit (9/5/2004) (Finca Sandoval) A a nose of blueberries, grilled meats, exotic spice, soy sauce, maybe a hint of kerosene too. Great varietal character on the nose. Supple and silky with great balance. Pure fruit with great concentration and persistence. Dark and meaty flavors persist in the mouth long after swallowed. Thoroughly ripe tannins with ample sweet fruit. Great stuff. | By Lyle Fass Rockss and Fruit (4/25/2003) (Finca Sandoval) What a great wine! 93% Syrah and 7% Mourvedre. Nice aromas of grilled meats, scorched earth, mineral, raspberry, chocolate. Beautifully balanced palate with elegant fruit, good amounts of glycerin and very juicy finish. This wine had great symmetry. So well put together. | NOTE: Scores and reviews are the property of Rockss and Fruit. (manage subscription channels) |

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net
Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos and Amontillados. But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
