After birthday dinner at JSJ. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours. Left to stand 1 day before. Lots of sediments at bottom of bottle. Appearance is clear, pale garnet colour. Legs. Nose is pronounced, with a bouquet of barnyard, muddy earth, leather, mushrooms, tea leaves, and smoked roasted meat. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, leather, tea leaves, mushrooms, roast meat, prunes, sour red cherries. Medium+ finish. Very good quality, but would definitely have been much better 6-8 years ago. On the decline now. Fruits drying up and tertiary notes dominating.
Elegant, earthy, feminine, smooth and refined. A beautiful mature wine. Decanted at 5pm and mostly drunk from 7-9 pm. A little brick on the edge and a translucent ruby color. Lots of earth, mushroom ans leather on the nose. Velvety soft on the tongue with some dried cranberry and cherry along with the various earthy notes. A joy to drink with a grilled rare ribeye.
My WOTN. A clean bottle in excellent shape. Lots of concentrated, lush rich blue and red fruit with notes of funky animale and foresty, earthy undergrowth that add complexity rather than detracting. Pure velvet in the mouth with a rich texture while maintaining a sense of lightness. Gorgeous and I wish there had been more in the bottle.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) This wine looks very different, only slightly darker than the 1981, but a much more youthful red-purple hue. Loaded with fruit on the nose, with an edge of wet pebbles and stones. Freshly ground coffee. This wine seems so young! If I didn't know this was a wine from the early 1980s I would have thought it about five years old just on the nose. The palate doesn't really alter this impression, with plenty of rich and smoky black and red fruits. It is quite tightly held together, although smooth and finely textured, with balanced acidity. Tannins show up on the midpalate and finish leading to a great length. This wine has years ahead of it.
