This bottle lacked the intriguing complexity, acidity and minerality of the previous bottle from the same source, perhaps due to the cork having fallen into the bottle at some point. It’s perfectly sound but too linear and simple. Not enough energy to make it very interesting. Still, remarkable that any white wine can be very much alive at age forty-one.

This is a remarkable wine and not just because of its age. It was a recent purchase from a Christie’s auction and I was later told it came from an excellent Oklahoma cellar. Through the clear glass bottle the color looked pale but once in the glass it was distinctly gold and may even have darkened as it breathed. The first sniff and taste were disappointing. Too light, too slight, not much going on. It needs to warm up. Then it showed that distinctive Laville wax, butter and dried apricot with just the right acidity. No fade at all after a couple of hours. Great complexity, splendid stuff.

Bright yellow. Fresh, crisp. Holding very well. Tasters guessed vintages in th 90ies. Long finish.
