  • Not decanted this time which was the right call.
Terrible cork, sticking to glass. Luckily, no adverse effect on wine.
The wine is drinking extremely well right now and is probably just past its peak.
Intense spicy and earthy notes with some fruit still remaining.
Impressive tannin strcuture but still impeccably balanced.
Reflects the very old vine age.
Drink within next couple of years

  • Very high in acidity, but not faded or short, it's just tart and I suspect it always has been. Still some tannic grip and lots of Savigny earth. Between the acid and the earthiness, very much an old school style, one for purists. Drink up.

  • Decanted this time.
showed beautifully. Must be at or just past its peak.
Fully developed aromas, softened tannins, good acidity, fruit perhaps showing first sign of starting to dry up.
Complex, exquisitely balanced Burgundy. Still one of my best cotes de Beaune experiences.

  • when first opened, without decanting, the tannins were quite niticeable and perhaps a little astringent. Some called it a "masculine " Pinot.
The following day, the earthy and spicy elements are really noticeable. The tannins have softened a little but still appear in the background. There is still life left in this wine as it continues to show great body and aromatic intensity.
to decant or not to decant...

  • Opened with no decanting, slightly cold...
At this point, I would no longer decant this wine ahead of time.
Incredible complexity and texture. Everything that I'm looking for in a mature Burgundy. It probably peaked a couple of years ago, but will continue to drink nicely for another few years.
