Sent an email to Penfolds asking their advice on decanting this wine. They said to pop and pour. I did. I should have at least opened a bit early, as this improved through the course of the night. Eventually showing black fruits with some violet and florals. Lovely mouthfeel and finish.
Popped & poured by TLV. Fairly dark core, maybe a bit of bricking at the meniscus, but not much. Opens with a Lipton onion soup mix note which quickly blows off revealing violets, blueberry, lavender and mint. The palate shows a nice mix of red and black fruit along with sweet herbs and florals. Lengthy finish. With air, eucalyptus and floral notes dominate. The fruit on the palate becomes more dark and slightly ripe- there's a hint of raisin. Thanks for sharing, TLV.
Opened by LostVerse. First made in 1951. Primarily Shiraz with less than 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Paired with beef wellington. Solid red color. Herbal nose. Good core of fruit with currant, blackberries and forest floor. Integrated tannins. Drinking well. 94-95 points.
Popped and poured. Similar to the 1986 in flavor. Cranberries, raspberries and blackberries. Longish tail. Alcoholic in nature. Slightly spicier than the 1986. Peaking now. Mellow flavor, and not a fruit bomb like the 90s vintages we had the same night.
