Denis Mortet horisontal vintage 2003 Winetasting dinner (16 btls) (Nordsjælland): Tasted 11 cuvees from Denis Mortet vintage 2003 and 5 other domaines for comparison reasons. We are talking about one of the most criticized vintages, but the tasting was a surprise. I gave 90 points or more to 9 out of 11 cuvees. All wines were garnet in color showing the tertiary development stage, but not too much, which I personally find un charming. The winner was Le Chambertin which I scored 97 closely followed by Clos de Vougeot (96). No. 3 was Lavaux St. Jacques (93).
This wine: One of the outsiders but from 2002. Even though 2002 is a better vintage than 2003 Ambroise is far from Denis Mortet Clos de Vougeot 2003. Medium garnet color. Rustic style. High tannin which I believe will not have time to soften as the fruit has left the bottle to a big extent.

Terrific showing tonight. Very dark color and restrained nose, but really opened up after 30 minutes. Rich, dark fruit with power and elegance (both lean and deep, if that makes sense). Much better than previous bottle. Should continue to improve.

Needed air. Some blood, steely minerality along some oak wich still needs time to integrate. Silky and balanced, this should a drinking well in 5-7 years. Masculine wine but elegant at the same time.

Very good. Rich and ripe, medium bodied. But not outstanding.
