THE RED WHALE California Syrah Tasting (The Jackson Arms): Loved this wine. Very nice rose and white flower component floats above blueberry and green pepper. Very nice, refreshing body, light on its feet with vibrant acidity, with a richness that you register in your short term memory. That sounds ridiculous, but it's true. A great wine.

I've never had a wine that smelled so unlike wine before. Extremely herbal - lavender and thyme - mixed with green olives and no fruit to speak of. The palate is dark, dense, and meaty, finishing with a dose of tannin. As interesting a wine as Frank Cornelissen's experiments, yet enjoyable.

My first La Clarine wine, and I'd say I'm fully impressed by this one, which totally over-delivers. At this point, it's been open 6+ hours, and just hitting its stride. The nose doesn't say Cali Syrah at all...lots of herbaceousness, freshly mown grass, white pepper, granite, tar. On entry, it is surprisingly supple, with juicy acidity and deft balance. Blackberry, cranberry, woodsy flavors, and a marvelous loamy undertone, which I ascribe to the Mourvedre component. Balanced from start to (long, savory)finish. Bottom line, a really pretty wine with freshness and engaging complexity, and a rockin' QPR for sure. Glad to have more on hand...could be the perfect house wine, affordable, accessible, but still plenty going on for my geeky side. I must add, this totally redefines for me what Foothill wine is capable of, and as such is a bit of a revelation.

Well this is an amazing wine.. complex, yet light on its feet, deep, yet refreshing. So accesible at a young age, but at its best open day 3 or 4 leads me to believe its a candidate for 6-7 years to peak.. Great with food, great on its own.. ripe tannins
