  • Either there is serious bottle variation or this wine just deserves an upgrade. It wasn't amazing, but it had olive and meaty notes after a while, and acids enough that it probably would improve over a few years. Not sure the complete story of the Magnanamus wine company, but they seem to have put their money on a range of wines made in Mendocino county, then gone south. I picked up a few of this line, which was plainly their middle to upper tier offering, and it's been much more interesting and, this time, rewarding than the price would have suggested. If you see this at a price that makes you think it might be worth a flyer, buy it.

  • Not as good as the '05, a little bit over the top. Maybe the tannins need more time to calm down, maybe the primary fruit needs to fade, maybe it was just a little too hot. Bought on closeout, so I can't complain, but I think it overwhelms food a bit. I got a bit of stewed plum, some black cherry notes. There were savory notes, but not in a balanced way--they just kind of stuck out at the end of sips, not rising gently through the layers like the best Syrah.
