Citrus and honey/butterscotch on the nose - slightly reticent. Med golden yellow, looking youthful for its vintage... but my god, the explosion on the palate with so much power and intensity...and yet so light-footed with everything in a wondrous tug of war leaving you dumbfounded for descriptors. Honey butterscotch sweetness just holding the citrusy freshness in check. Supreme length and a freshness that leaves you wanting to quaff the entire bottle immediately...all this within the first 10 mins of opening!

Absolutely fabulous wine. The wines displayed a viscous palate with great depth and balance and a lengthy and provocative finish. The wine never stopped evolving throughout the course of the dinner.

Birthday Dinner 2015 (Mitzo): A rich, opulent wine which was enjoyable without quite hitting the heights of a truly great Sauzet Montrachet. It was rich, sweet and fruity on the nose, with warm butterscotch aromas wafting around a sweet core of ripe pineapples, fleshy stone fruit and ripe red apples, and then a trickle of spice and mineral running underneath. With time, lots of nutty, roasted almond accents started coming up as well. In the mouth, the wine seemed big, plump and a bit hottish at first, but the overt heat faded a little with time and air, leaving behind rich, creamy layers of red apples and pineapples sprinkled with nutty popcorn and sweet butterscotch notes. There was tons of strength and power and great depth here, but it also had a grippy structure and a clear, brilliant balance that made it seem effortless, even elegant. It finished very nicely too – long, strong and juicy, with notes of cream and white fruit, spice and nuts riding on a nice pull of minerality and well-integrated acidity. This started out on the wrong side of weighty for me when it was first poured, but it grew so nicely in the glass until it was quite a compelling drink by the night’s end. Very good, and drinking decently well now – do give it a good amount of time and air before serving though.

A lovely wine, no question, but was paired against the 1990 Bouchard Montrachet which was by far superior. Very mineral at first (a little atypical for a Puligny wine), then opened up to express the more traditional buttery elegance of the terroir. We could have opened it a few hours earlier.
