Green capsicum and peppermint greet the nose suggesting a lighter expression of Coonawarra Cabernet to follow. The palate picks up the acid throughout the tasting. However a medium to lighter bodied flavour of mint and chocolate follows. Not a great wine but more than pleasant enough for summer drinking in Australia. The wine does lift with aeration in the glass.

Pretty much ditto for flavour and nose from my 2021 tasting notes. This one seems to have more of an acid backbone which actually detracts from it to some extent. Maybe the vagaries of a cork enclosure. In any event it's a bit less integrated and pleasurable to drink than the previous bottle.

St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Vertical spanning 3 Decades (Merce's Castle): Another vintage strangely under cork which came out in one piece and was in excellent condition. Dark purple in colour, aromas of eucalyptus/mint and olive. Palate continues the same theme with nice length. A well balance wine but for me was expecting a bit more from this vintage. To be honest has probably just hit its drinking window so could improve with a few more years under its belt. It’s a wine you would be happy to drink any day of the week if it was offered to you, but there is nothing extra special about it. It’s a blue-collar wine … honest and hard-working.

{screwcap, 14,5%} Rather too much mint and dark chocolate to be a satisfying mouthful. Seems to struggle with ripeness, tannins are resolved and a bit faded; it’s medium weight, dry, but just a bit one-dimensional.

(St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra) Very dark red violet color; aromatic, savory, rust, tart red currant, mint, roasted red fruit nose; savory, tart red currant palate with medium acidity and firm, fine tannins; could use 4-5 years and should go 25+ years; medium-plus finish (14.2% alcohol) 92+ points

Cork. Not screw cap. Light bodied. Quite acidic. Tannins still there. It sure how much longer I’d keep this.
