  • Nose was great with dark berries, slight earthiness and spice, stone (gravelly and flint) and oak. Then huge palate was extremely closed and reticent showing almost nothing except huge tannins and alcohol. The nose shows all the makings of a very good wine with solid structure in the future even though its not giving much pleasure now. Do not drink till at least 10 years old.

  • Produced from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Spice, blackberry liqueur, licorice, earth, graphite and gravel scents lead to a full-bodied wine with supple tannins, freshness and good concentration. The wine ends with a bright, elegant cassis-filled finish. 95-96 Pts

(Château Lafite-Rothschild (Pauillac)) A very straightforward blend in this vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Merlot 20%, a little more Merlot than we have seen in recent years. Alcohol 12.8%. Dark black fruits on the nose here, a dark curranty character, with elements of grey smoke. Opening out on the nose with a little air to give a more expressive seam of plum fruit, sweet and dark cherries, yet correct with a smoky edge and perfumed richness. A convincing start to the palate, cool and with a very linear, precise style to it through the middle and finish. A very supple weight coming in as well though, and great structure and bite form the tannins beneath. These have a ripe character, and are all well tucked in underneath the fruit, showing their velvety density only on the finish. Here the fruit looks black, smoky and substantial. There is great potential here. A really fine finish, showing more exuberant fruit tones with every taste. There are some really well-hidden depths here; the more you look the more open up and reveal themselves. this is certainly a wine which only reveals itself with a reasonably lengthy inspection. A wine with a huge length, filled with honest grip and massive potential.
