Great, great bottle. Hue is about halfway to orange. Good saturation to the rim. Wildly aromatic. Like walking into a tea shop in the 1970s Haight. Very good after a short decant, but just explodes when paired with lamb ragout caramelle pasta and grilled American Wagyu Ribeye cap. Bought on release and stored at 56. In the drinking window.

The grand finale for my 40th birthday celebration (Adam's, Logan Square, Chicago IL): Nose: It's not often that I am stopped in my tracks when I smell a wine, but that is exactly what happened here. To accurately describe the sensory experience isn't easy as some of this just defies words. This shows off immense depth, layering, and class and flowed out of the glass with tart red cherries, strawberries, fresh picked raspberries, violets, wild flowers, rose petals, earth notes, leather, red currants, and roasted herbs.
Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with silky and refined, high tannins and crisp, high acidity. The structure is beautifully balanced and starting to peel back so as to allow the feel to really show. There is a plushness and silky quality to the feel backed up with great depth and purity along with red cherries, raspberries, strawberries, violets, wild flowers, roasted herbs, leather, and earth notes.
Overall: This is a truly special Barolo. Words can't fully express how spectacular and special it is. Piedmont is one of my greatest passions and this is easily one of the greatest Barolos I've had. Happy 40th birthday to me!

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 5/13/2016-5/14/2016 (Chicago, IL): This is a very tight nose, with a lot more tar than roses. The palate is very tough and firm, and in fact, I don't think I recall drinking a Barolo with this much tannic density. There is a lot of power and density in this -- this is a super serious bottle of Barolo, with some intriguing and concentrated medicinal and herbal flavours, as well as a lovely amount of earth. The fruit is there, but it's hidden under that rich powerful texture. Legendary Barolo.

Fully mature, first bottle more developed with hints of barnyard, hay and damp cellar, Bordeaux feeling. 2nd bottle more alive with smooth dark fruit.

Rather ordinary. Expected much more from a denominazione di origine controllata e garantita Barolo. Too bad.
