Six years after the last review for this vintage here and still outstanding. Opened and found it to be musty but with incredibly strong fruit flavor. The cork crumbled in half and wine was 3/4 up but the top of the cork was still fine.
Let it breath in the bottle for three hours before pouring into glasses at which point the fruit had blended, much of the mustiness had blown off and the complexity increased. Great depth of flavor and rich fruits; unexpected after 39 years!
If you have one of these still I'd open it soon. I don't think there are more than a couple more years in this one.
Wine dinner at Cafe Cortadito (NYC): Dark red colour bricking a little at the rim - still looks incredibly youthful. This comes across like an outstanding older Northern Rhone with dominant leather and gamey notes giving it a sauvage character, and complex flavours of cedar, smoked meat, spicy red fruits and tar underneath. Subtle, layered and still seems to have the stuffing to last a while longer with grainy tannins and vibrant fruit on the back end.
Beautiful wine that poo-poohs the travel shock theory. Lugged around NYC all day before popping with dinner. Cork broke in half, but the wine was pristine. Beautiful cedar/redwood frames spicy and still energy-packed red fruit. This particular showed better than the prior and hard to dispute that this is as gorgeous an example of petite sirah that exists.
All I can say is wow! After 33 years, this thing is still kicking. In my opinion the tannins and fruit are amazingly integrated and well balanced. I'm not sure how much more life this baby has, but man did I enjoy it. For a petite syrah, the fruit was more muted than what I would expect if younger, but taking age into account there were no complaints. I didn't really take formal notes while drinking, so please excuse my informal ramblings on this one!
