I opened to double decant about an hour before my train, immediately hit by wet cardboard aromas. But I decanted, and actually didn’t get any TCA from wine itself. Before I rebottled I removed the rest of capsule, which reeked. When served 6 hours later it was singing. Black plums and cherries, cigarbox, leather, and menthol. Long and resolved. A-

50th birthday nugget. Bottle-breathed for 1.5 hours. Cork was intact at the wine end (phew). It did lose some lustre as we poured. Would have corovan’d it if I had a redo. Crimson brown color, clear and light viscosity. Earthy, prunes, leather on the nose. Forrest floor, marzipan, plum palette. No tannin, mid-acidity, Probably peaked 30 years ago, but then again so did I.

Négocient label, presumably late release. Very fresh, took an hour to come alive, beautiful sweet fruit aromatics, woody, minty, quintessentially Margaux. 92-93

Unusually, K appreciated this old wine more than I did. Too me, the fruit was good but clearly “very” old, even more so than its 48 years. The color was very advanced but decent for age with no brown. Decent texture although not as silky as I would expect for Palmer in a slightly soft vintage. Very complex as you would hope. Lots of old wood smell, like mahogany. Autumnal, leafy. Acidity is slightly high. Strictly for fans of old wine. I liked it but I didn’t love it. Even for Bordeaux, very few make it to the half century mark fully intact.

Bouquet distinctively Margaux, but past it's prime
