  • The '58 is an incredibly beautiful wine, and somehow, it remains a powerhouse at over 60 years of age. Of a trio of older vintages ('55, '58, '64), this came across to me as the cleanest wine and clearly the most powerful.

The nose is intensely perfumed with sweet fresh red roses, fresh mint, dried red cherry fruits, roasted meats, and spices. On the palate, it is medium bodied with a feeling of intensity and power that is shocking in a wine of its age. The power of the wine is balanced by the sweetness of the fruit and floral tones, and the lively acidity, which here is in ideal proportion to the weight of the remaining fruit, whereas in the other older vintages, I found the acidity to stand out a bit more than ideal. Mint, fresh roses, dried red cherry, and earth flow across the palate, ending in a resounding and long finish.

  • The '58 Mascarello is a gorgeous wine, remaining powerful and vibrant at age 62. The nose is highly perfumed and very cool toned, with sweet candied red cherry fruit, peppermint, smoke, earth, cloves, and star anise. In particular, the very fresh, minty note stands out on the nose. On the palate, the '58 remains full of life, with a wave of sweet, smoky dried red fruit, mint, and earth. The wine was like pure silk on the palate, with the tannins having resolved completely but the wine retaining a medium-bodied texture and good concentration. The sweetness of the fruit and the freshness of the flavor profile were accentuated by the brilliant acidity, which was just enough to enhance the wine without being too much to stand out on its own. Towards the long finish, the wine transitions a bit and adds some meaty, earthy notes, with dried red fruit fading into smoke and black truffle / earth. The one note that stands out throughout the entire experience, from the aromatics to the finish, is the fresh minty note, similar to what I found in the '70 Mascarello I tasted a few months ago. From a good bottle, this is clearly an incredible wine drinking around peak, with the wine retaining power and concentration but having acquired stunning complexity and a perfect, silky texture.

This bottle was labeled Cannubi, but my understanding is the label has no meaning vs. the normal '58 Barolo.

  • Barolo gathering at Officina (Officina - Washington D.C.): Still showing good saturate color. Surprisingly expressive and energetic nose displaying clean slightly sweet red fruit, cherry, dry cherry, caramel, fruitcake, tar, clove, cinnamon and iron mineral. Beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered slightly dry cherry fruit, still showing good richness, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity, strong iron mineral, fully integrated tannins and a seamless long cherry driven finish with cinnamon and iron at the end. Drinking beautifully.

  • 2018 Festa dal Barolo gala dinner
    From Jamie 1.9L bottle

Sous bois, soy, beef broth, and ferrous notes on the nose initially. Eventually some subtle dried roses and fruit. On the palate, autumnal and savory with some underlying fruit and porcini with time. There is a sense of minerality and lift to the palate with the acidity giving it a paradoxical sense of freshness (in the scope of this wine). Fully tertiary at this point and while alive and very enjoyable much less so than a terrrific bottle two years earlier. 90

  • So I have had this wine twice in the last 3 months. First time from 750 and this time from magnum. La Festa 2017. The first time I had the wine there was a long discussion at the table about it being fake. It was dark, youthful and really appeared nothing like ~60 year old wine. Next to the 61 and 64 which were much lighter in color it was hard to believe. And again, this time from a magnum, this wine was the same. Dark, youthful, nuanced, perfumed, rich, deep and just classic Bartolo. I am utterly amazed at this wine. Thrilled to have been able to try it twice. One of the best glasses of wine I have ever had.
