  • Lime and lemon base with plenty of white pepper and stoney minerals. Really refreshed the palate and went well when paired with an oily fish.

  • Helles Strohgelb. Nichtssagende Nase, etwas Zitrusfrucht.

  • Color: Pale straw yellow.

Nose: A bit shy. Some lemon-lime citrus fruit, and very mineral, with a steely, flinty edge. Very pure and crisp, and very slightly vegetal as well. Even the smell is refreshing. It does begin to open up some with air.

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly full and plush. It's not fat, but it's got some richness.

Palate: Wow. A whole different animal here. I can't remember the last time I had a wine that was so reserved on the nose but so expressive on the palate. The profile is as expected from the nose, but the volume is turned way up. Tons of fresh citrus and stone fruit, with juicy lemon, lime, and apricot flavors. Also very mineral, with a nicely bitter flinty/chalky undercurrent and nice tart acid to balance the fruit. The herbal/vegetal character is also there as a nice understated component, too. Long, sappy finish of citrus and stone.

So intense and yet so refreshing at the same time. And with the texture, it's amazing that it's only 12% ABV. This is the kind of wine where you want to drink the whole bottle by yourself. Insanely good value.

  • Junge, hell strohgelbe Farbe. Frisches Bouquet nach Äpfeln und Weingartenpfirsich, leichter Hauch nach weissem Pfeffer. Am Gaumen bestätigen sich die Aromen, etwas kurz...

  • The nose was slightly restrained with crushed minerals, stone, floral undergrowth and peach skin. On the palate, it showed ample weight for it's springy acidity and mineral flavored core. Stone fruit with a lemon acid zing and wet minerals washed over the senses, leaving a limestone and tart apple finish. This wine went down beautifully well and kept the mouth watering.

Terry Theise Estate Selections

  • By Terry Theise
2012 Austrian Catalog, 6/1/2012, (See more on Terry Theise Estate Selections...)

(Ott Grüner Veltliner Am Berg) ($20.00) This is the lead-in, the “Steinfeder” of the range, one might say, often with just 11.5% alc. Immediately it seemed different from other 2011s; more focused, more solidly structured, cooler. Lentilly and red pepper aromas; the brightest freshest GV I’d yet tasted; lima-beany and fennel-frond; it’s whole-cluster pressed and has a refreshing
not-entirely-ripe thing that makes it perfect for Summertime sloshing.
