After recently having the 09 Donnhoff Hermannsohle Spatlese, I made the comment along the lines of ‘tremendous flavor impact with little palate weight’. Well, this Schaefer Spat took that to a whole different level. Almost like flavored air in fact. It does carry a good degree of residual sugar, which for my taste, can sometimes can fit my mood more than others, but in time, this should be a hell of a good wine.
Quite possibly the best Riesling I have ever had. The perfect level of sweetness for me and a wine with perfect balance of sweet, fruit and acidity. Every mouthful was a complete delight. No idea how I am going to resist opening the other 5 I have to see how this wine develops as I am already looking forward to the next bottle! This wine shows what exceptional value top German Rieslings are - this is a world class wine at a brilliant price. Loved it.
Not quite as aromatically expressive as other bottles have been (I wonder if this might be starting to close down a bit?), but it's every bit as thrilling as I remember on the palate; a crystalline texture with incredibly fresh, pure Mosel fruit, florality and slate coming together, and wonderful balance. I'll leave the rest of my bottles alone for some time.
this wine was delicious. still young and primary but manages to pull out a fair bit of complexity. the most striking feature was that despite the lightweight package, the wine felt so dense, rich and flavorful. to continue the contast, the wine balances an intensity of flavor with a creaminess at the end, and a beautiful sweetness with ample acidity. i didn't realize how much acidity was present until i felt a twinge in the throat like i had swallowed a few cups of lemon juice. it pulls out perfectly balanced.

(Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #5) ($46.00) A little botrytis now, contributing to a truly celestial fragrance; here the whole thing goes incandescent, as the fruit goes all tantra upside the mineral; it is getting terribly hard to spit these. The pointillist detailing of the dialogue of elements is so tender and pure, it seems to cleanse the very world. ***
