  • Yellow with a hint of gold, but still very bright even at 7 years old. Clean nose that is very floral. Orange marmalade, apricot and even a honeysuckle nose. This shows signs of Botrytis, but not honey or ginger, but a slight bitterness that reminds me of Orange pith. It is sweet, very sweet, but doesn't feel heavy is somehow light and sweet. Also has almost a cinnamon or ginger note, which leads me to Botrytis also.

This is a very nice Riesling, but when compared to other vintages of Rotlay it feels somewhat basic. It's missing the lightning bolt of acidity and mineral edge that makes me love the Rotlay wines. This may come around and will likely age very well, but I'm hoping that some of those mineral or petrol notes show up because right now it's just missing something. I have 4 more bottles so we will see.

  • Could use a little more acidity and a little less sweetness.

  • After the great 2009 Rotlay and the truly astounding 2010, I was thrilled when I managed to pick up three bottles of 2011 at a discount. Never have I been more disappointed in a wine. Fat, flabby, and pillowy soft. Overwhelming botrytis without almost any acid to balance it out. It embodies everything that is wrong with the (in my opinion) truly unexciting 2011 vintage.

Similar experience with all three bottles. This wine completely redeemed itself with the electric 2012 vintage however.

  • Poured alongside the '12, this comes across rather soft in comparison. The fruit's similarly ripe and tinged with sweet floral and honeyed notes, but there isn't the same stony mineral undercurrent of flavour here, nor is there the same acidity to cut through the sweetness. Leftovers hold up nicely and it tastes better, actually fresher and more vibrant the following night with more air, but this never hits the heights of some of the other Selbach-Oster en bloc bottlings.

(Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling "Rotlay") ($54.00) Here’s a little cinéma vérité; we had three lots, of which “B” gave the most funky old-school Mosel. Everyone loved it. But a blend of all three pieces gave a more symmetrical, more complete dialogue, a “better” wine, at the cost of civilizing the beast that was “B.” And the wine is superb. But…but “B” is just so gloriously ornery – let’s do it! **
