  • Sometime it's like an extra-sensory power that guides my hand to the right slot in my disorganized cellar. I didn't really know what I wanted to drink with cold roast chicken, guacomole, and ranchero beans, all leftovers from a party two days ago. This lone bottle, obviously neglected for years (since I wouldn't know if it could age anyway), almost seemed to leap into my hand. Where I got it, what I paid, what's in it, I have no idea, and must confess I don't know what grapes are allowed in a Mallorcan "vi de taula" as identified by the label.

The color was still surprisingly dark for a 12 year old wine, and I momentarily shuddered thinking it was going to be more roasted than my chicken, even though it only has 13.5% alcohol. After a brief refractory period, the nose opened without a trace of heat, revealing an appealing mineral (volcanic) profile, ripe plums and blackberries, slate and a garrigue-like quality. Smooth and generously restrained in the mouth with pronounced minerality, it somehow reminded me of a cab that wanted to have an identity of its own and so took the road less traveled by. Didn't remind me of tempranillo or any other grape except maybe carignan. Great with the food and not at all intimidated by some spicy beans or guacamole. A real pleasant surprise all around.

Now it's time to see how much I don't know. I'll be right back, I'm going to see if I can find someplace that lists the actual varietal(s). Drum roll, please: old vine callet, with a little fogoneu, mantonegro and cabernet sauvignon (the cab seems to have been eliminated after the 2000 vintage). Crazy wine from a crazy place. You have to read the English translation of this Spanish retailer's website if you want a few laughs: https://www.lacentraldelvino.com/es/doc-115/9000026_-vinos-an

  • Nice deep colour. Some fruit on the nose, but mostly oak and density. Sour oak upfront, slight smokiness, big scratchy tannins. Somewhat smoother finish with a little spiciness and cherry notes. Sadly this is not distinguishable as anything unique, which it should given its lineage, but a modern generic wine made by the numbers. Not awful, moderately good with braised veal roast, but sad nonetheless.
