Nose took some time to open to a rustic barn door fruit. Plum and licorice. Entry is very strong building to a tart spicy licorice bomb. There is a lot happening with this. Needs time but this is very extracted and concentrated. Finish of bark and herbal mint.
Gambero Rosso 2013 (Metropolitan Pavilion): The 2009 La Crena is dark and brooding with black cherry, tobacco, milk chocolate, baked bread and exotic spice. On the palate, it was muscular yet juicy with red fruits, herbs and cinnamon. The long, mouthwatering finish was laced with tart berry and spice.
One of the more muscular and restrained Barbera that I've ever had, I was in the minority of people who liked the Scarrone (Alba) over this one. Slightly austere with a touch of tobacco, plum, rich earth, humus, forrest floor, moss and wet leaves. Don't get me wrong, it's very tasty and well made but I just thought this was too closed and dark for Barbera. Maybe it's me, but I prefer a juicier, fruitier style.
