  Great Older Wines at the Place to Drink Great Older Wines (Tampa, FL): Dexanted 20 minutes before serving, which brought some further nuance without sacrificing freshness. Dense, meaty and chewy, this was rich and fairly powerful, even if not the most complex old Bordeaux of all time. Best example of this wine I’ve ever tasted.

  Birthday Dinner with Good Wine (NEXT Restaurant - Chicago IL): Popped and poured. Much like another bottle from 2 years ago, this provided good, simple pleasure. Mature plum and black berries with better aromas than flavors. Most interesting to start, far less enjoyable after 30 minutes in glass. Served alongside the very good 1959 Ausone.

  50th Birthday Celebration Dinner with Wine (Chez Schmidt - Chicago IL): Very ripe mature fruit. Larger scaled than expected. Lots of earth, lots of fruit. Surprisingly easy to enjoy for a wine its age, not very nuanced.
