Wow! Still spectacular!! Drank with an '85 Groth and '85 Sociando Mallet. The Insignia is still a teenager rather than a dusty patriarch. Lovely dark, clear ruby with a fruity eucalyptus nose that kept opening and growing. Gorgeous balance and big mouthful with tannin providing structure without being bitter, puckery or dry.
Color is surprisingly youthful with deep ruby-garnet with mild bricking; nose has moderate intensity, good balance, and subtle complexity with some black fruits, blackberry, but really dominant green notes with mint, bell pepper, eucalyptus; palate is full bodied, well integrated tannins that are not yet drying, some juicy black fruit that fades towards the midpalate, nice slight menthol complexity; finish is short-medium length. This is a real treat and shows great balance and old-world complexity with new world fruit, perhaps only a bit short on the palate which may be due to slightly faded fruit given its age. Still enjoyable and I wouldn't be surprised if it persists a while longer. 92-93 Update: even more complexity with air with some peppery spice on the nose and palate.
no notes so NR, as i remember this it was still lively enough with some acid despite the age, but the fruit had gone and so was mostly some dank dusty secondary palate elements, felt past it's peak for sure but a nice enough experience for old aged Cali cab
