  • Decanted for two hours before service. In the glass, saturated, dark crimson/maroon. On the nose, currants, ground coffee beans, and secondary notes of smoke and damp earth. On the palate, initially elegant and balanced, with currants, cocoa, and a faint touch of port-like oxidation to add complexity. On the finish, however, the tannins come out of hiding and assert themselves forcefully. Definitely a bipolar wine at the moment - at least another five years, and probably more, for those tannins to settle down.

  • A few days in Napa with fellow CT'r Cristal2000: There is a simmering herbaceous energy that swarms around the black currant and unripe black cherry flavors, with menthol and forest floor rounding out the profile. The cooler vintage makes for a more serious demeanor here, but not without first giving up classic hits of red and black fruit square mid-palate.

This ain’t no 2016 in terms of ripeness and ultimately “opulence” (a relative term when referencing Promontory), but the 2010 is a wine worth paying meaningful attention. It was at once old school as well as so young. It’s like seeing a baby with a receding hairline. Think Stewie on Family Guy. The whole thing honestly kinda trips me out. My own senseless orientations aside, I say check back on this in 2030. This is a long hauler with a great future ahead of it.

  • Keeps getting better with time and from my favorite vintage in the last 11 years, 2010. One more bottle and this has many years to go to be at its optimal potential.

Grootse wijn. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Smaak / Afdronk: 19 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 96/100

Colour: Deep impenetrable dark red with a thin edge. Aroma / bouquet: The first impression is determined by pleasant, subtly sweet, impressions of cherries, cherry liqueur and chic leather. After some time also a start of riper tones, mushrooms / wet forest soil Taste / Aftertaste: The wine opens in different layers. First of all with a refreshing acidity and fresh aromas of cherries, eucalyptus with a hint of menthol. Powerful but refined, droppy, tannins. Concentrated and refined, in a beautiful balance between acids, tannins and alcohol and between fresh and ripe tones. Overall / potential: Brilliant wine. After 11 years already fantastic, but still with a seriously long future ahead of it. Great wine. 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / Bouquet: 13 + Taste / Aftertaste: 19 + General / Potential: 9 = 96/100
