  • Blind tasting. Opened at 6pm which was closely closed. Drank at 9pm, and it started to open. Bottle continued to open and improve over the entire evening. Soft but healthy cork. Excellent condition.

Orange rim, blood red center. Perfume, cinnamon, prune, mineral, flowers. Silky tannin, and lush texture. Complex and elegant. Soft yet powerful. Very long finish. This bottle was youthful and still had decades of cellar potential ahead of it.

Most guests thought it was a Barolo due to the structure. Rudy K. thought it was a 1982 Barolo Cannubi or Barbaresco San Lorenzo. He explained his reasoning: 1982 was better than 1985, and San Lorenzo is the closet to Barolo structure. Very interesting.

It was also voted 2nd place of 7 bottles, only losing to a 1962 Leroy La Romanee in blind tasting, but beating 1966 Chateau Latour and 1961 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion.

  • So fresh, drinking great. Perfect bottle condition, elegant, with clean and pretty fruit.

  • Out of magnum an excellent bottle of wine with medium to long finish and still having lots of great flavor. I shared with 15 wine loving classical musicians and other wine friends who loved it. I originally had cases of 750s of all 1985 Gaja three single vineyards which drank well when young. This magnum had the same freshness they had 20 years ago.

  • Nebbiolo Dinner (Imperial Treasure Shanghai, Ngee Ann City, Singapore): Superb. This bottle must have been well-stored, because when poured, it came storming out the glass like a wine at least a decade younger. It had such a rich, heady nose, with wafts of smoke and wood spice and tar, deep aromas of dark cherries and berries, a toss of earth, some meat, and then little twists of herb and bramble. Wow. The palate share some of that rich, heady power in its dark cherry and berry flavours on the attack, tied to a sinewy, muscular sense of structure at its core. Impressive. But what struck me was really how pure and juicy and super youthful it still was, with a wonderful clarity showing in the midst of all that chewy fruit. This had power and precision, with a sharp sense of focus that made me think it could still go on for another 10, 20 years easily. Great finish too, with a little smoke and ash and a little earthiness all riding on a mouth-coating layer of the finest tannins. Wow. This was special - it almost made up for the flawed bottle of 1985 Sori Tildin that was paired together with it. I have seen quite a few recent tasting notes on this wine suggesting that it is over the hill, but the bottle we had was anything but. While really impressive on the night, it clearly had its best years ahead of it yet.

  • Barbaresco (New York Vintners, NYC): Decanted at 3pm. Intense red fruit nose. Still a little tight. Ripe red fruit, but something seems off. I don't think this is a representative bottle. Hard to judge. Not rated.
