  • The "new" cellartracker somehow alerted me that I had already entered a tasting note on the 2008 vintage of this wine several years ago. That was "new" information because I had no memory of it, and perplexed I proceeded to read my old note, which I try never to do before entering a "new" one. How is it that I am the only one of millions of readers, posters and posers on cellartracker who has commented on this wine?

And not only that, back then I entered the appellation wrong and now I'm guilty of labeling it Dolceacqua instead of Rossese di Dolceacqua-and in my 2008 note I spelled the grape wrong. Nice job all the way around. Hopefully it's because the site wouldn't let me enter it correctly, which happens from time to time. And one other thing: I don't get it how it seems the most obscure wines imaginable (like this one) have beautiful label images already posted on the site but not a single note? Do people believe the label provides adequate info to help drive a purchase? I thought that was confined to labels with cute animals, but what do I know? Is it easier to take and upload a picture than write a few words? Or maybe obsessive collectors upload images for every bottle they buy before they taste it, and never get around to drinking the wines?

Rossese, I can confidently state, thanks to the ridiculously authoritative Jancis Robinson book Grape Varieties, is the very same as tibouren, a grape cultivated in Provence, that must have infiltrated the close-at-hand Ligurian border. The wine has a plush, deep cherry aroma with mineral and garrigue-y notes, thick, earthy and savory flavors, and a long slightly hot finish. It's labeled 14% alcohol and I'd like it better if that were dialed down. I paired it tonight with an herbed pork roast, and it seemed a little ponderous. Needs more substantial fare to show its best, like some kind of mediterranean lamb dish.
