  • 13.5% alcohol. CS 84%, Carmenère 16%. Very long cork; the last 5mm nearly detach at the extraction stage (should have used a longer screw). Did not decant on account of the venerable age of the bottle; instead, I opened the bottle an hour ahead and poured two glasses 20 mn before the meal. The first whiff out of the neck of the bottle is very promising. Deep colour with some thinning and suggestions of the onset of bricking. A fair amount of turbidity.
Rich ripe nose with pot-pourri, snuff box and dark berries; even a suggestion of incense. Very classy. The mouth is just as good, with excellent length and superb mouthfeel; the fruit is pretty focussed on blackcurrant, and there is substantial acidity in the finish. No opulence, and none the worse for it.
Very good indeed and pretty individual too; there is a hommage to left bank Bordeaux here, but it is not a servile imitation. What sets it apart is the complete absence of Merlot, which is a very bold step, and brilliantly executed. Not only is this the best bottle of new world wine that I ever had (and by a country mile too), but it is among my best bottles altogether.
A success without a doubt, and showing no sign of getting tired.

  • Thought this might be past its prime, but wrong. Outstanding. Paired with low country boil (shrimp, sausage, corn, potato) and it was brilliant. sweet red cherry fruits with plenty of medium tannins but enough to let you know they are in the house. some earthy funk and tobacco. special treat was pairing with home made cherry pie.

  • Decanter FWE. Shows some nice maturity notes but much less so than the 1996. Typical Cabernet characteristics. Mushrooms, soy develops after about an hour in the glass. This wine seems bigger than the 1996 but has yet a great structure and balance. The fruit shows more in the 1997 than the 1996 and it has a slightly more warm mouth feel. Again a great wine!

  • Occasional tasting group (By TBa @ WN Top South America plus some extra's.): Beautiful and fairly elegant bouquet with dark berries, tobacco, sweet spices and rustic elements. On the palate a full bodied wine with still dark forest fruits, a firm amount of sweetness, but also good and fresh acidity and soft tannin. The wine is beautiful and completely ready now. No hurry.

  • Medium-dark garner with brownish hue. Nose of dark fruit, toast, tonacco, coffee, sweet spices. On the palate soft, tame, wonderfully aged. The Carmenere aromas and the overall ripeness give it a bit of a sweet, southern touch. Aromatically good but medium complexity/finish.
