Oakville AVA tasting (67 Pall Mall): According to the producer this is one of those times the vintage works to undermine the house style - and you can see that this maybe doesn't have the dialled back freshness and balance of the '18 I also tried. However they've still done a great job - deeply saturated and heady on the nose without being an archetypical 'big Napa cab'. Some savoury, animal notes along with ripe red and blue fruit. Definite signs of tertiary development but the overall impression is of a wine that's still squat, coiled and waiting to unfurl slowly. Powerful, chiseled tannins, dense and compact on the palate. This has years to go.

Excellent. I gave this a 1 hour decant, and it was absolutely ready to go. Served with steak and Guinness stew and it was an amazing pairing. This vintage of Heitz cab got underwhelming critics scores, but Heitz cabs are made in an old school Napa style (not sure if anything has changed since they were sold), like Corison, Seavey and Dunn - all of which we love. Maybe it was underwhelming on release, but patience was rewarded here. I actually tried it at the winery 7 years after release and I knew it would be a good one (they were renowned for sharing library wines during their tastings, including Martha's - I hope THAT hasn't changed!). It's earthy and spicy and the fruit has held up well. It's not fading at all, but is likely at its apogee.

It's fine but tasting a bit past its prime. Should have had this one a couple of years back. Expected it to be able to sit a bit longer. The 2007 I had recently held up much better and was quite nice.
